When n3rds collide

Posted by RaJ on November 5th, 2006

Found (via Neatorama) a post titled The Beauty of Mathemagic, which shows some interesting symmetry and patterns in various numeric arrangements and operations. Some examples:

1 x 8 + 1 = 9
12 x 8 + 2 = 98
123 x 8 + 3 = 987
1234 x 8 + 4 = 9876
12345 x 8 + 5 = 98765
123456 x 8 + 6 = 987654
1234567 x 8 + 7 = 9876543
12345678 x 8 + 8 = 98765432
123456789 x 8 + 9 = 987654321

I thought, Cool! because– well, mostly because I’m kind of a dork but also because… argh! Cheese and Crackers, man, do I have to explain everything to you?! In other words, “I dunno why.”

Even better than the “maths” post itself* is its comment thread. Here’s one comment which nicely sums (ha! math pun!) things, written by someone named NeverEverWrong:

All you smart math people suck!! The only thing worse than a stupid jock is a smart idiot that is never wrong!! Why are you stupid ’smart’ people flaming each other in the comments section? How pathetic are you? IT’S THE COMMENTS SECTION!!!!!! I met a smart guy once, who claimed that he was never wrong (stupid Ph.D. (Piled high and Deep)). He was one of the biggest jackasses I’ve ever met. So the next time you decide to leave a comment, leave a positive comment only. If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything. If you stupid math fools actually did this for a day you’d quickly realize that you will never have anything to say. Which would be a boon to mankind. -Stupid morons-

Alrighty then! Also when preparing this post I noticed the Mathemagic author added a Sequel, so - I gotta go see it. Right. Now. Sorry, what can I say except geeks rock!

At least my mom thinks so. And my Radioactive Spouse. And some of our children. So I’m, you know. “Good” with that. ;-)

* Not really ‘better’ but still good. Strange… this subject sure seems to bring out the flamebait. Go figure (ha! math pun!).

I turned my back on math back in the late 90’s, but even I’ll admit that it’s pretty neat.

Do you watch that show Num3ers? Maybe you too could help solve crimes.

  2. S-RaD Says:

oh I could so imagine you and Dr. Enstine on that show, liven it up a bit.

good luck for nablopomo, I know you’ll have a breeze with it. I am a tad worried at the thought of catching up with all your posts.

don’t be eaten by a bear!

wow, pretty cool. and i’m only saying that because it’s coolLOOKING, not because it’s math. i want that noted for the record. i have a rep to maintain.

You wanna see a math brouhaha? Check THIS out.

That kept me amused for like… a WEEK.

That comment says something to me…something about trees, apples, and genetics. Can’t really put words to it, though.

Omar - no time for television, too much blog work.

SRaD - The Doctor and I aren’t on the best of terms since the ultrasound. But thanks for the encouragement; would it help if I created a new category called Staff Must-Reads? Oh wait, there already is an “all” category, isn’t there? ;-)

Cadiz - duly noted; rep maintained and completely intact.

Sween - hi, and - thanks! Definitely a winner.

Glo - heh. Another commenter (on the original post) mentioned something about its hypocrisy, I don’t know why.
