Turing Test for spambots

Posted by RaJ on October 20th, 2006

(note to ‘Greg’ - I mean no disrespect. Bear with me please)
I almost - almost - not-spammed this one. I still might.

The case “for” this being a legitimate comment stands on three points. First, the reference to Steve Martin is appropriate for the “targeted” post (also I tend to agree with his take on Mr. Martin). While this doesn’t exactly overwhelm, it’s somewhat more persuasive than “I am agreeable to your point of view! I hope to make feiends with you!” etc.

Second, the ‘visit’ was recorded by statcounter, highly unusual for spam-comments. The third point is simply the absence of embedded links* for … whatever.

“But RaJ,” you ask, “why does Akismet think it’s spam?” Why, indeed. Unfortunately, Akismet is a ’silent’ trapper; it never says why it thinks a comment is spam. Fortunately, we have the entire interweb at our fingertips! We can use the erstwhile Google™ to research our visitor! And so we did! Well, I did anyway.

“But RaJ,” you ask, “what did you find?” I’m glad you asked; in a word, ‘adult.’ Which is of course “his” bidness, figuratively and maybe literally. Still - free country, 1st Amendment, all that, but I suspect that’s why Akismet thinks it’s spam; comes with the territory. So to speak.

Anyway. Greg? I’ve got nothing against you personally, and you’re welcome to visit and comment here. But my faithful tool Akismet has its doubts, and it’s not often wrong. Let me qualify that: as far as I know it’s *still* wrong about me i.e. flags my comments as spam on Anaglyph’s site but that’s a separate problem. To settle this, I am going to ask you to take a one-question test (hence the post title) to verify your human-ness and … intentions. Pass the test, your comment gets not-spammed and we get on with our lives.

Actually, that last part will happen pretty much regardless. But you get the idea. So here’s the Test: leave a comment on this post, and tell me Turing’s first name. Speaking for myself, I hope you take the test and this post as a special “hello,” because it is. Normally I just delete everything Akismet snags because - well, normally it’s all spam. I have my doubts about your comment, and maybe that’s a good thing. We shall see.

Update Let me make one thing perfectly clear. I am not a crook The Google™ excerpt for the url shown in the image above says in part, and I quote, “The Internet’s Celebrity Nudity Expert…” I am not recommending you visit; I’m just trying to, ha-ha, expose the truth: is this a legitimate comment, or just another bit of spam delivered the old-fashioned way?

* Ah but there is one link, yes? Ay, there’s the rub. So to speak.

Ah, but mr skin likes to ski. You can tell by his web adress.

  2. RaJ Says:

Remember the part where I said ‘adult’? We’re not talking adult water-skiing here. But you knew that, right?

  3. SithSnoopy Says:

There’s a skiing that has a sexual connotation?

Wow. And I thought I’d heard it all.

  4. RaJ Says:

Okay now you’re just making fun of me because I can’t ski.

  5. demosthenes Says:

You can’t ski? No wonder you’re getting flagged as spam at Anaglyph’s!

  6. glo Says:

Phew. I don’t need to know Turing’s last name. I get test anxiety. Thought I’d never be able to comment again…

  7. anaglyph Says:

Hey - Mr skin wrote to me too with this news:

    mr_skin | greg@mr_skin.ceecee | http://mr_ski.moc| IP: 68_3_232_20

I read the Kate wants to have another baby. But she wants to concentrate on her career first before she starts trying. I didn’t know she had a 7 year old.

    He’s a chatty dude.

  8. RaJ Says:

Did he get quarantined? Oh, and I kind of– well, pretty much ‘deleted’ his comment here. He hasn’t taken the test and his comment was sort of, you know, floating around with a bunch of others in the ol’ Akismet powered comment commode, and - as often happens - after a while I got tired of seeing them and I, well, you know. Flushed.

  9. anaglyph Says:

He did get quarantined. I prolly wouldn’t even have noticed hime except for your post. I usually do a quick scan and hit the Flush button pretty fast.

So far Akismet has intercepted ONLY spam, except for you.

    Hmm…

    “Hmm…”?!
I’ve got a bad feeling about where this is going. In fact it’s pretty much the same feeling I get when I see pictures of your widdo pooddy-tat.

In Turing Test Two, two players A and B are again being questioned by a human interrogator C. Before A gave out his answer (labeled as aa) to a question, he would also be required to guess how the other player B will answer the same question and this guess is labeled as ab. Similarly B will give her answer (labeled as bb) and her guess of A’s answer, ba. The answers aa and ba will be grouped together as group a and similarly bb and ab will be grouped together as group b. The interrogator will be given first the answers as two separate groups and with only the group label (a and b) and without the individual labels (aa, ab, ba and bb). If C cannot tell correctly which of the aa and ba is from player A and which is from player B, B will get a score of one. If C cannot tell which of the bb and ab is from player B and which is from player A, A will get a score of one. All answers (with the individual labels) are then made available to all parties (A, B and C) and then the game continues. At the end of the game, the player who scored more is considered had won the game and is more “intelligent”.
