November specials

Torqued

Posted by RaJ on 20th November 2008

I’m trying to find a for-real poster like the picture shown below, to give to a car enthusiast co-worker. So far I’ve hit Teh Googles and despair.com but not found it available for purchase. Any ideas?

Let me just say this about that

Posted by RaJ on 19th November 2008

The picture linked in the previous post? Not me I swear. I can’t even take credit for finding the picture; I tripped over it in this plurk, scorched my eyeballs and decided you needed an opportunity to do the same.

If I were really clever, I’d have suggested a caption contest. Now it’s too late; I’m still laughing at Erik The Replicant’s comment (#2 on the previous post), and I’m having trouble imagining a better caption for that picture.

However.

Feel free to try, because Ya Never Know.

Cold snap

Posted by RaJ on 18th November 2008

Life is full of risks, you know?

For example. By putting this link in a blog post, I risk losing readers.

I don’t know what to say except “I’m sorry” and I hope you’ll forgive me some day.

Coding standards need not apply

Posted by RaJ on 17th November 2008

Here’s a snippet of pseudocode I wrote this afternoon:

if ( ( lunch == slim_jim * 4 + jack_cheese ) && PM_meeting ) /*then*/
gas_problem = true;

This code runs in a TMI context.

Radio Captive Jam?!

Posted by RaJ on 16th November 2008

Disclaisure: I’m not clever enough to create things like this or even find them without professional help. A plurk feiend brought this to my attention and, well, I liked it. A lot.

The end.

Dear anonymous

Re: your comment.

OK. I got here searching for Eldritch Cleavage. Don’t ask.

Mere words cannot express how much I appreciate you taking the time to comment, and reminding me about this post (from last year).

Thank you. Thank you very much.

Ho hum

Posted by RaJ on 13th November 2008

Just another ordinary day at work: look at code, mess with PowerPoint slides, get chased around the parking lot by a sentinel robot…

You know. Same old, same old. ;)

Disclaisure: the TALON Robot that chased me is not in fact equipped with grenade launchers.

Yet.

Fighting the not so good fight

Posted by RaJ on 12th November 2008

Are the spammers winning in your battlefields? They seem to be doing so in mine. :(

I have a friend - an older lady - who has one of the worst email-inbox spam problems I’ve ever seen. She’s used the same email address for close to a decade; not extraordinary by any means but she doesn’t want to change, and I don’t blame her. It’s not just a matter of convenience for her, either: she has her email address printed on business cards and letterhead, and has circulated the address among a large, established customer base. Change would be expensive, and there’s almost no way she could be sure she notified all her existing contacts.

Her internet “service” provider does no email spam filtering whatsoever. Instead they offer something called Mail-Block, which is a srsly unfeiendly and ridiculously draconian white-list “solution.” My friend gets frustrated and lost every time she tries to navigate that system to un-block incoming email. She’s daunted and dismayed by the so-called feature; I merely hate it.

I see no way to resolve her problem other than to start a new email account, preferably something with built-in aggressive and effective spam management like gmail.

Any ideas from you, my fellow warriors?
